Learning the basics of keyboard and music theory is an essential part of the curriculum:

At least a basic understanding of music theory is imperative to having an easier time    understanding the complexity of sheet music as the pieces get harder

Music theory is fascinating to many; it includes elements of math and group theory, has a structural and logical beauty, and students find theory to be a pleasant and interesting part of the lesson.

For the children (and adults) that are fascinated by the concept of making their own music, theory and composition are the pivotal point of the lesson. We learn:

  • key signatures

  • rhythm

  • chords and intervals

  • inversions and progressions

  • the circle of fifths

  • modulations between keys

  • basic instruction on how to compose lead melodies and then create a backing of other voices

  • and many other basics of keyboard theory and composition

We also analyze various pieces of music and then practice creating our own melodies and expanding them with a full grand staff arrangement played with both hands.
